An opportunity presents itself at the beginning of October—nothing to do with the car and everything to do with the widow Maxie J. Douglas.

Filled with shame and self-loathing, I venture back to the coffee shop near Maxie’s place. The coffee shop has spared no expense for Halloween. It’s been turned into a veritable haunted house. Bats hang from every nook and cranny, as do spiders. Ghosts open their mouths in frozen howls, and devils smirk everywhere. I hate it, but at least there aren’t any Jason masks from Friday the 13th. I can tolerate anything but him.

I ignore the less-than-savory decorations, order a doughnut, and settle into an armchair by the window. Maxie shows up less than ten minutes later. Not alone. No, she is with Zachary’s sister, the mysterious Alice Douglas. Double the trouble. My pulse thuds. My skin itches. I watch these two women, both blond and blue-eyed like my son. I soak in every detail: the closeness of their poses, their easy but awkward smiles, their little touches and lingering gazes. They remind me of… Could it be? Are they a pair? Together? Yes. The urge to crack their newly in-love perfection seizes me.

They sit. They laugh. I strain to hear their conversation. The gist goes like this:
